What is Pilates?
Pilates, created by Joseph Pilates, is a system of exercise and movement designed to improve overall physical health and well-being. Originally called “Contrology,” Pilates is a method that engages the entire body. It is more than just an exercise routine; it is a series of controlled movements that require full involvement of both the body and the mind. The method consists of over 500 exercises, not including modifications and variations, which can be performed on specially designed apparatus or on the mat.
Pilates is based on the principle that, before strengthening the peripheral muscles, the “powerhouse” must be strong and stable. The “powerhouse” refers to the deepest muscles of the abdomen, pelvic floor , buttocks and lower back. The Pilates method works by rebalancing the body through movement, helping you alter how you use your muscles. It focuses on changing your body mechanics and movement patterns through stretching, strengthening, and control.
